On a shortened course this year, Sage Canday (US), ticked off his second win in as many years this weekend in the Vibram Tarawera Ultra.
The course was shortened from 100km down to 65km due to safety fears surrounding the tropical cyclone Lusi which was in line to hit New Zealand over the event weekend. This was the 6th running of the event, now part of the Ultra Trail World Tour, boasting runners from all four corners of the globe including the USA, South Africa, Brazil, Europe and beyond.
New Zealand's own Vajin Armstrong posted yet another podium on the Tarawera stage coming home in 3rd place behind surprise silver medalist Yun Yanqiao from China.
In the female race, New Zealand's Jo Johannsen took the win after a convincing gap was created, leading from the 12km mark - an impressive victory after only having started running less than 12 months ago.
